The Life Design Workbook

This workbook is broken down into chapters addressing a different life design stage. Each chapter includes exercises to help you build adaptability, creative problem-solving, and mindfulness. You don’t need to complete everything in one go. Take your time, and revisit sections that feel important. The more you engage with the exercises, the more you learn about yourself and your needs.

The Mindful Method

Life Design Stages

  1. Mindset: Cultivating an open, growth-oriented mindset that embraces change.

  2. Understand: Develop deeper self-awareness by examining your thoughts, behaviors, and responses.

  3. Define: Clearly articulating the challenges or goals you want to focus on.

  4. Create: Generating creative solutions and experimenting with different approaches.

  5. Measure: Reflect on the outcomes of your experiments to determine what worked and what didn’t.

  6. Evolve: Applying what you’ve learned to continue growing and adapting over time.

Evolve

The Mindful Method of Life Design considers how the environment plays a role in determining whether the impact of the changes you make in your life will last. A supportive environment—at home, work, or within the community—can help sustain the positive changes that your intervention aims to create. On the other hand, an unsupportive environment can undermine progress and prevent lasting impact. This is why paying attention to these contextual factors is essential when fostering environments that reinforce your desired changes.

One of the most important environments to consider is your digital environment and how it impacts your “digital self.” Your digital self is more than just who you are online; it’s part of your identity. It’s a chance to explore who you are and grow. By embracing your digital self, you can use technology to try out new aspects of yourself and expand your experiences.

The workbook carefully examines how we change in the digital age. The exercises focus on the power of technology and how we can make it work better for us. This means questioning who has control and ensuring our principles protect our identity and well-being.

Experts on this subject include Dr. Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, a program that focuses on understanding how technology impacts our personal and social lives. Dr. Turkle has said that evolution is essential for personal growth. Her work has shown that becoming a stronger, more capable version of yourself requires continually trying to improve and innovate. In our connected world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by digital demands, but balancing technology use with mindfulness can help us thrive.

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”

— Jon Kabat-Zinn

Life Design

Life design involves crafting your life to reflect your values, goals, and needs. It’s inspired by design thinking, a creative way to solve problems. Instead of trying to figure out your entire future at once, life design encourages you to experiment, prototype, and evolve—just like you would when designing a product. The goal is to make small, meaningful changes that bring your life closer to what truly matters to you.

Life design encourages you to think of your life like a project. You identify areas where you'd like to grow, develop ideas for how to make that happen, and test those ideas. For example, to feel more connected to your community, you might start by experimenting with small steps, like attending local events or volunteering.

As a creative practice, design is the intentional process of crafting your life to align with your values, goals, and needs. Based on principles from design thinking, this approach treats life like a project that can be thoughtfully planned, prototyped, and continually evolved. It focuses on shaping your behavior, habits, beliefs, and lifestyle to reflect individuality. The concept emphasizes autonomy, creativity, and self-awareness, allowing you to create a meaningful and purpose-driven life.
